Everest. Overnight at a guest house

DAY 05

Tingri - Lhatze (approx 150 km); 3900m
The riding is pleasant, you will be passing a 5220 meters pass called "Gyatso La" today and continueing riding down to the fertile valley of Lhatze for tonight stay at a local guest house.

The drive on this day is just 90 km but, if interested, you can drive to the small, picturesque village of Kardoi from Gyantse (120 km round trip). This excursion will also take you to an old castle, Kumbum and Palcho Chode monastery. The hotel in Gyantse has good facilities, like the one in Shigats

On arriving you may feel as though we have left Tibet and entered China , for the Chinese influence - signs, people on the street, development - is ever more pervasive. And upon reaching Lhasa itself, you will see the suffocation of the old Tibet by the new layers of Chinese infrastructure, covering nearly 100% of the city. Lhasa is a sprawling, modern Chinese city with polluted air and horn-honking traffic congestion but we will stay there for two full days to acclimatise and take in the awe-inspiring Potala and other parts of thisr World heritage site Elevation - 3650 metre

BEIJING - LHASA - KATHMANDU (18 days)

This tour presents a delightful blend of high adventure and exotic culture.

Exploring ancient palaces, monasteries and temples, a ride on the world’s highest train, a journey to ‘the roof of the world’  and to Mt Everest Base Camp. This tour offers you an experience and journey of a lifetime! This trip takes you on a whirlwind tour to three oriental cities: Beijing, Lhasa and Kathmandu. Exploring these three cities will give you an insight into three ancient cultures, Chinese, Tibetan and Nepalese. But the major highlight of this trip is the journey aboard the Quinghai-Tibet railway, the world’s highest railway. Another highlight of this trip is the visit to Mt Everest Base Camp.

Your tour commences in Beijing, a city in Northern China. Beijing, an ancient capital and a bustling modern metropolis is a city of amazing contrasts. In Beijing some incredible historical sites await you. On a guided tour you will explore the Forbidden City, the Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall of China and the Temple of Heaven.

Leaving Beijing you embark on a train journey to Lhasa, aboard the world’s highest railway. The Quinghai-Tibet railway. As the train trundles along the high Tibetan plateau, picturesque scenes of Tibetan countryside whiz by. Owing to Tibet’s high altitude the train has installed oxygen supplying equipment. Oxygen masks are available to those who are prone to altitude sickness.

In the old city of Lhasa, you will be taken on a guided tour to all the city’s major attractions: Potala Palace, Sera Monastery, Norbulingka etc.  You will then travel south on the ‘Friendship Highway’ by Toyota Landcruiser towards Nepal. You will visit important Tibetan cities such as Shigatse, Gyantse and Shegar. On reaching Rongbuk you get to view the world’s highest mountain, Mt Everest. As you leave Zangmu and cross the ‘Friendship Bridge’ you enter Nepal. There is a refreshing change in scenery, as verdant greenery replaces the dry and arid Tibetan landscape. In Kathmandu you will get to explore the three medieval cities: Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.

LHASA, MT KAILASH & LAKE MANASAROVAR (19 days)

Mt Kailash, located in the far west corner of Tibet is the most sacred peak in Asia. The beauty of the 6700m mountain is unbelievable! It looks like a symmetrical cone shaped rock capped by pure crystalline ice all the time and is echoed in various mythological and literary works. Dominating the north of the Himalayan Barrier with its spectacular view the Mt Kailash (or Mt Kailas) is equally venerated as the holiest pilgrimage site by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains & Bon-Po. Tibetans regard this mountain as the manifestation of Mt Meru, ‘The Navel of the Earth’ where founder of Bon religion, Tonpa Shenrab, is believed to have decended from heaven.

A 3 day trek (Parikrama or Kora) around Mt Kailash over a 5630m pass clockwise for Buddhists and Hindus and anti-clockwise for followers of the ancient Bon religion. It is said to erase the sins of a lifetime.

To complete the Kailash pilgrimage one should bath in the sacred Lake Manasarovar, stunningly set on the Tibetan plateau.
On the journey to Mt Kailash you will see cliff-top monasteries, wild looking but hardy and hospitable Tibetans, yak caravans journeying over snowy passes and the great peaks of the Himalaya with a foreground of grazing herds, yak skin tents, and a glittering turquoise lake.

This is truly the trip of a lifetime with stunning scenery and cultural highlights. You can join this trip either in Lhasa or Kathmandu.
